In landscaping lingo, ‘softscaping’ refers to the organic or living elements of your yard. This includes your lawn, trees, grass, shrubs, hedges, and anything else that falls into that general category. Our experts have lived in Wyoming for many years and know what plants thrive here (and look good, too.) We can help you design your landscape to be beautiful and low-maintenance, and our crews will even do all the hard work of actually installing it as well. All you’ll have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy your yard’s new look!
The most common “yard” trees in Cheyenne include aspens, pines, and cottonwoods. While they are each a bit different, they all serve the same general purpose, which is usually to add some variety to your yard and give you some nice shade. One major question that you should consider when deciding which tree is best for your landscape is whether you want an evergreen or not. There are good things about all types of trees, but evergreens are unique. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of evergreens (or coniferous trees) vs. deciduous trees. These two categories don’t perfectly encompass all trees, but they get pretty close and give a good general idea (especially in Wyoming, where we don’t have the variety that many warmer places do).
Coniferous (Evergreen Trees)
- No raking needed
- Looks nice all year round
- Provide a lot of shade and privacy
- Fallen needles are less kid-friendly
Deciduous (Leafy Trees)
- Enjoy “traditional” tree experiences (jumping in a pile of leaves, climbing, birdhouses, changing colors in the fall, etc)
- No sharp needles
- Requires fall cleanup
- Bare and dormant in the winter
Regardless of your preferred tree type, it is important to remember that trees are an investment in the future. It takes years for trees to reach maturity, and if their plantings aren’t planned well, they can sometimes grow where they’re not supposed to – such as into walls, fences, or even each other. We’ll take future growth into account as we plant to make sure your trees won’t interfere with each other, and that they’ll grow how you want them to in the future.
Even in Cheyenne, Wyoming where it’s cold and dry for much of the year, there’s a wide variety of plants, grasses, and shrubs that will grow here. If you’re looking for shrubs that make good ground cover and are still appealing, we recommend going with things like Knock Out Roses, Dappled Willows, and Juniper. As far as garden plants go, some basic and beautiful options for a sunny include Day Lilies, Lavender, Peony, and Russian Sage. Shady gardens can happily support Bleeding Hearts, Foxgloves, and Coral Bells.
If you have questions about good plants to grow locally, don’t hesitate to give us a call! We can design and install beautiful gardens for you, or we would be happy to give you advice as you’re working in the garden yourself.
